ARCHIVES: JUNE 2004

WEDNESDAY, june 30

I went to the mall tonight in search of one or more things off my mall list:

1. Shoes for wedding dress (hurry before the fall shoes get here)
2. Bathing suit for honeymoon (hurry before the fall clothes get here)
3. New dark jeans for job interview (hurry before friday)

The deal with wedding shoes is that its the biggest mess i've ever seen, if you go the "bridal" shoe route. Allow me to describe the evil scene in all its stupidness: First, I have to give them money, and I can order only one style of shoe and in one size. I mean, what am I? Hobbit Cinderella? (that's only funny if you know that Snail says I have hobbit feet). If that size doesn't fit, I wait another 2 weeks for the next size to come in. That will never work for me.

There are other bridal shops that stock sizes but they only sell the top top stuff (read: $200). Those are some beautiful shoes that will stay in the store. What I need is comfort first, price second, and style third. After all, my dress is to the floor and no one but Prince Snail will be seeing these things.

OK, back to the mall...So, the first thing I hit is the shoe sale rack at Nords. And the first shoe I try on is a great fit, cute and priced decently. Its a cute shoe. Taupe with off-white trim. (the off-white part being what will match my dress). Anyway, I don't think i'm going to be able to tell if they look right until I have my first fitting and can try it all on together.

I bought another pair of shoes also--for everyday wearing. They are suede and brown, a heeled clog thing. They REALLY fit my foot. Of course, when I got home and put them on for Snail, he said they look like something Prince would wear--- as in, Prince the Purple One. I didn't take that as a complement. Snail concluded by saying he would think about it.

You may be thinking that I should just forget what Snail says, but you must understand, that from a fashion-standpoint, he made me what I am today.

This from the JULY issue of LUCKY Magazine, page 102 (pictured above):
NOTE: If you aren't familiar with LUCKY, you should know that its all about shopping. Its an entire sales pitch for clothing, eye shadows, earrings, lip glosses, lotions, etc. Featured items are priced from $2.00 to $500.

" Every skincare thing has some kind of crazy hook: nano-encapsulated-peptothalidomide, or whatever. Or sea-bream extract. Or in a recent horror, a line of skin creams with "embryo" skillyfully worked into the name of every product.

But the secret ingredient in this new item from Shu Uemura managed to thrill and intrigue me: Somewhere along a craggy, remote coast in Antarctica, there's an ancient glacier slowly (or not so slowly, thanks to the SUVs) drip-drip-dripping into the sea. Not so unusual, except that where the glacier comes out is thousands of feet under the ocean. The supercold, super-mineral-infused (glaciers grind up rocks as they inch along) water circulates around in a chilly, glamorous current. In Japan, the Shu Uemura people have some oil drill-like contraption (doubtlessly much less obtrusive and thousands of times chicer) that taps the water and quickly whips it into this highly alluring cream, which feels like some delicate gel, slightly cooling as if in sublte reference to its glacial origins. Very "Octopus's Garden," very Jacques Cousteau, very now."

I think my favorite line (though there are many..
.) in this bit is "chilly, glamorous current".....Who couldn't use one of those? And the SUV comment in conjunction with the "cute" oil-drilling contraption.....ummm huh?

No matter how many times I read this thing, it still cracks me up. There's so much in here to laugh about. Take your pick.

SUNDAY, june 27

--I have a busy week at work ahead of me. Knowing there's a three-day weekend coming my direction will help me get through it.
-- I can't stop eating those chocolate covered espresso beans from movie night. thank god i just ate the last one.
--It was another rainy weekend. I enjoy the thunderstorms...But at the same time, i'm willing for it to be sunny.
--Did a lot of painting today and went to Garden Ridge. I went there for a biggish frame....the kind with no glass, like for a canvas. They had NONE. can you believe it? Every two times a year I go in there, I am reminded how that place is completely worthless. So big, and so worthless.

FRIDAY, june 25

Last night we went to see SHREK and it wasn't a great experience. We went to the artsy-ish theater, and my $8 went toward a screen that is barely big enough to qualify as "movie theater". I kinda wish we had gotten our money back right then...But i wanted to see it, and my judgement was clouded.

About 5 min in, Snail says he thinks the lady sitting two rows up is crazy and smells like poo poo poo. We moved to the back, which made the screen smaller still.

The highlight was that we stopped beforehand at the store for snacks. I had chocolate covered raisins and Snail had espresso choc things.

The movie itself was ok. The soundtrack was lacking. The characters were great (except the fairy godmother, who i thought did not hit the mark). I still love the Donkey best.

When I got home and got in bed, I watched Oprah: after the show. The cast was on. Unfortunately, they didn't have anything interesting to say.

-----------------

I went to lunch with a friend and had a chicken vermicelli bowl. Tonight, when i see Snail he will tell me that I smell like garlic -- which is why i don't eat there very often.

WEDNESDAY, june 23

I just finished a darn good meal. I had made the decision at work today to cook Tortilla Soup for dinner. I stopped at the store and bought some chicken tenderloins at the poultry counter. Those things are the new ticket. They are cheap and ready to roll in a format I can easily handle. While I am a full carnivore, I can only deal with a certain amount of raw meat processing. Anyway, I cooked that with olive oil and onions, then dumped in broth and some canned mexican cheapy salsa. Serve it up with lime, tortilla chips, and cilantro, and there you go. I had an avocado which unfortunately wasn't ripe yet.

TUESDAY, june 22

I went to the gym after work today. It had been a while. My gym is in the building I work in. Its small, but in a good way and it looks out on to a fountain. Whenever I get down there (typically between 5 and 5:30), I am always greeted by the sound of Rachel Ray's voice and often the gym is empty. I always wondered who had been watching her before I got down there and the other week, I figured it out and it's a guy. Not that a guy wouldn't like her, but most men at my gym like to watch the Conan reruns or the news. Anyway, its nice to have Rachel Ray waiting for me to join her down at the gym.

SUNDAY, june 20

I'm back!!! I've been sick with a functioning cold for about a week. Yesterday, in an attempt to finish the illness off, i subjected myself to an entire day in bed, watching FOODtv (and DieHard on the side, which I had never seen). And that effort paid off. I slept the entire night. Didn't wake up coughing once! Didn't choke on any cough drops!!!

Today is Father's Day. I made my dad a card and sent him a chili's gift card. I hate to do that, but the man is super hard to buy for. And he doesn't have any hobbies....because he spends his free time running his wedding photography business. And I think i'm a better present-buyer in person. Its a bit tricky from a distance. Plus, his birthday was just two weeks ago.

After I have a bowl of rice krispies, I am going to make a wedding to-do list. I think i started about 3/4 lists like that, but this one is going to be the real deal. Time to get back on the planning saddle. Actually, I don't think there's much for me to do...But I won't feel right until its all down on paper.

MONDAY, june 14

I stopped at the store on the way home from work with my heart set on some hard salami. Mainly, i wanted to pair it up with some cheese + salad for lunch tomorrow . Something to add excitement to my McD grilled chicken salad routine. I was really thrown off when i saw that all of the deli coolers at the store were down for the count. I wandered around trying to think what in the world I could eat other than salami? Finally I settled on pork cilantro sausage and I am now making rice. Also, I cut up an avocado and made guac, but i think the avocado may be a couple of hours on the bacon side. (you know when an avo goes bad and it has that funky taste?) Snail will confirm or deny when he gets home. He's the avocado whisperer.

I launched my portfolio redesign last night at 11pm. I am so pleased to have that old thing gone for good! I wouldn't say the new site is fantastic, but its updated and pleasant. I think I may add a thing or too...maybe some bits of flash. We'll see.

Remember how that hotel I stayed at in Houston was going to send me a check? No check has been delivered to this address. Do I persist?

I need to check and see when HELLBOY and LADYKILLERS will be out on DVD. I wish to see both.

THURSDAY, june 10

We saw Prince last night in San Antonio. The drive down there was mildly terrifying, as it was pouring rain. I mean, rain was coming down. Fortunately, we arrived without incident. Our seats couldn't have been more perfect and the venue was right on...not too big. Prince amazes me at how hard he works on stage with his constant dancing, singing, and enthusiasm. I had a fantastic time.

Prince was my first concert ever. It was 1988: The Lovesexy Tour. Following that, I saw him in DC ( the symbol tour )and then in San Antonio 4/5 years ago. I think our good seats last night, made it one of the better Prince shows i've seen.

I first started listening to Prince because my older cousin did. When I joined one of those cassette tape clubs, I ordered Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day, 1999, a Van Halen album ( under the influence of my older brother ) and the Go-Go's. I must have been around 14 years old. Since then, I've been pretty much hooked on Prince. I don't have a favorite album. It's all good and so varied. I don't own some of his more recent stuff.

My favorite sets last night were acoustic Red Corvette and Adore. I was also happy to hear Nothing Compares 2 U, but that song isn't the same without that woman singing with him...Rose Gaines, I believe. That reminds me of a section of the HITS cd, DISC ONE tha everyone should hear. ( Nothing Compares, Adore and then Pink Cashmere )

One of my favorite songs of his is Strollin. That's a song I'm not likely to ever hear live. It's off the Diamonds and Pearls CD. Its one of the happiest most deliciuos songs that I know of.

I am on a vacation day today. I am going to grab some Prince cds and drive out for a breakfast taco. I want to hear Strollin, How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore, and that's all I can think of right now.

SUNDAY, june 6

I've been on the computer most of the weekend. Not the most fun, but I finished the wedding website, worked on my portfolio redesign, and finished printing envelopes for our save/date cards. This morning, we finished putting some plants in the ground. I like that I got a bunch done.

This week is the Prince concert in San Antonio. Wednesday night. I admit that I don't savor driving down there after work....but...hopefully once I'm there, I'll be glad that I am.

Last night, we rented LOTR: part III, and we are going to finish watching tonight.

THURSDAY, june 3

Tonight I am drinking a starbucks chai with soy and working on the june blog redesign and wearing my gap khakis. Ha.

OK, storytime. Remember my trip to Houston? well...i should surely mention my visit to Anthropologie: land of all things that 31-year old women want.

Initially, I could have just enjoyed the browse around the store and walked out with nothing, same as I did in Crap+Barrel, in typical sleepypie fashion. But, then I thought about Snail and how if he had been with me, that he would have wanted me to pick a little something out for myself. I tried a few things on in the glorious natural-lighting dressing room and made my purchases. I was rather pleased with my accomplishments. Back at the hotel room, I set my shopping bag down, tucked away under the desk....umm.....by the trash can. Can you guess where this is headed? Yes you can.

I check out of my room a few days later and noticed that my beloved Anthropologie bag was no where to be found. LONG STORY SHORT: The hotel conducted an investigation and a housecleaner remembered "throwing my bag out" and they are sending me a check for the value of the contents of that bag.

Now, I admit that placing a bag by the trashcan may not be the brightest move...BUT in my own defense, the hotel where I was staying was located in the heart of a major shopping district. I mean, i don't think its wise for housekeeping in such a location to throw any shopping bags away! Especially not the kind that stands up on its own with handles....a regular plastic bag, I could maybe understand.

Right after the incident and before I knew what the outcome would be, I called Snail to complain. He insisted that I march right over to Anthro and just repurchase my goodies and actually i DID go back, but the line was long, and well...the magic of my initial shopping experience was gone.

There you have it.

TUESDAY, june 1

This is my new favorite snack: Quakes Rice Snacks, cheddar cheese flavor. They are mini rice cakes coated with cheese powder. Super good. I tried the caramel flavored ones but the caramel makes the rice part lots crunchier and therefore a different texture.

Did anyone see the Rachel Ray marathon on sunday? Did you see the one where her sister was on there cooking with her? classic.
