Wednesday August 27
After a couple of years' worth of buying books, both new and used, I decided it was past time to join forces with a public library. That stack of books that have accumulated on my nightstand is getting high and I don't want my bedroom all cluttered with books.
Having no recent experience with a library and with only a vague perception of libraries as a dusty old place where homeless people use the bathroom, I went in with what I thought would be a simple plan for success - for both me AND the library. Go in, grab some Agatha Christie books and be on my way. Kind of a trial run. I'm in. I'm out.
One book. One Agatha Christie book. That's all they had. One. One that I snatched up.
Do you know how many books she has had published?
"Only the Bible is known to have outsold her collected sales of roughly four billion copies of novels" Yeah........
On my way through the stacks, I saw the LARGE PRINT MYSTERY section and noticed that they have about 10/15 of her books. So, I got "the ONE" book they had and one of the large print books. As I was signing up for my library card, I inquired about the absence of AC books. The librarian seemed puzzled, as she was sure there had been at least 2 shelves at some point not too long ago. She pondered that perhaps someone had checked them all out.
Checked out ALL 2 shelves of books? That certainly IS very mysterious. heh.

It was about 3ish years ago that I first started taking paintings out into the public retail world and since then, I have dreamed of making little bags/covers. I mean, if YOU bought a painting, wouldn't you expect a bag of some quality/fashion to carry your new treasure home in?!?!?
I finally got motivated this week when I had some pieces custom framed. Normally, I have gotten away with cheapy standard sized ones. Not this time. So, you can see that its more timely than ever to get those darn covers made for their own transportation and general protection.
NOW, you know my ultimate goal is to pull an 'Elsita' on these, and whip up some badass label/embellishment/patch thingy. yes yes yes. (oh! perhaps this will be my football project for this season) Right now, I'm just going to enjoy the fact that I drove to the fabric store, came home, got out the sewing machine and sewed them up and did it. Actually did it.
---
The frame is about 12" x 15" with an 8-ply mat and the watercolor painting is 3" x 1" on Yupo - The fabric is wool felt (no hemming!).

I bought this print from Little Robot. It's part of a set, but she let me purchase this one separate. I'm not sure where we will hang it. I am kinda working on our (my) studio room lately, trying to make it a little more 'nice' to be in.
The Little Robot blog is interesting too and I am adding it to my short list.

We had old school movie night, this past weekend and watched Class of 1984 (1982). It was all about the "future" (2 years into the future) and how the public school are all in ruins because of the dope dealin, gang fightin youth. Those youth are corrupt and causin trouble! This film gets a little serious - any film with a rape scene gets an automatic 1-star deduction. I give "Class of 1984" 3 out of 5 stars.

On my way out of town, I got stuck on the airplane on the ground for an extra 3 hours. My trip was lengthened even after that and if I typed out the details, you would be bored. Stay with me!
My advice to you after this experience is to not board a plane without your own supply of liquids, because the supplies on board are limited and it would only take a few extra hours to reach the outer limits of those supplies. And, you just never know when that's going to happen.
ANYWAY, as a result, I went through both books I had brought really quick. I was forced to make a airport store purchase or suffer additional hours of boredom. Enter: Agatha Christie (above). She has sold more books than anyone, outside of whoever wrote the Bible. And Shakespeare is right up there with her. Currently, I am about to finish Carribean Mystery (1964) and just picked up And Then There Were None (1939). I was always curious about her books and they are incredibly easy to read and only $2.00 at the used book stores! Pick one up with your Big Mac and gobble it down over lunch!

Last night, I received a book recommendation from a few avid fantasy readers in my clay class who stated that I couldn't claim to be a 'dragon book reader' unless I had read, Dragonriders of Pern (1968). I promptly swung into Half Price Books and picked it up, trying to avoid the gave of a dude-fantasy browser that lurked nearby. This has the whole series all under one very not-ready-for-starbucks looking cover.

It's a short jump to July
