Monday December 22

Tomorrow, we leave on our first Christmas vacation. This christmas greeting is for all of you! It represents all of my preconceived judgements (and/or hopes and dreams) about the place to which we travel. See if you can guess!

May you and your loved ones be healthy and safe over the holidays.

Wednesday December 17

I still haven't made kale but I made BEETS! I roasted them in the oven last night and tonight I peeled them and sauteed them up in what I already had in the pan - pork chop fat

First, put a peice of BEETS! on my fork. Then I looked at the BEETS! on my fork, thought "What is that?" and then chewed and then thought "This is pretty good." Then I put another BEETS! on my fork and thought, "What IS that?" and then thought it tasted good. It's like overcoming all of your previous ideas with each bite -- the deep magenta color is impossible to ignore. In the end, my plate was empty.

I would describe the flavor as a combination of carrots and potato, with the texture more like the carrot. In some ways, it's hard for the BEETS! to live up to it's appearance. It's like the cover DOES look better than the book in some cases.

I intentionally ate them straight up tonight, but I can definitely see BEETS! in a salad - BEETS! are too gorgeous to live without!

Pearl, Take 1: I attempted Tapioca Pearl this weekend and it came out over cooked. I think the recipe was for the bigger sized pearl - that is obvious to me now. Since I had never made it, I wasn't sure if it would grow enough to be the full size or not and the answer was 'not'. Regardless, it's fascinating stuff.

Good-bye gifts - off in the mail you go to virginia!

= whew = done and done =

I did not take the pledge to buy homemade this year but I am certain my family members will be thrilled with all of their mall-purchased gifts complete with receipts, as that is what their hearts desire. If your family loves hand knit scarves and funky pots and one-of-a-kind jewelry, then more power to you.

Saturday December 13

In the middle of the night, a week ago, Adam caught this documentary, Dear Zachary. They are reairing tomorrow on television:
MSNBC on Sunday, December 14th at 4 PM EST.

It has won a lot of awards.

I asked Adam just now if I should watch it ---- he already told me the whole long story of the events that take place and I know it's not a happy story and since my life is primarily about Star Wars Wii and Dragon stories, I thought maybe it would be more dramatic than something I might typically watch. He said, "Yeah if you want to freak out on some crazy shit."

There you go - there's your movie summary.

Adam turned me onto a mid-century artist who went big time with Disney ---- Mary Blair. If you follow illustration at all, you realize how many people have ripped her off. Surely that happens with so many different things in life - there's no doubt about that. And when you see the real thing, there is no mistake that you're truly seeing it for the first time. Great work.

[ Our camera is broken and it's sad to not have any recent pictures. The camera still takes pictures.... but the self timer is always on AND the flash is on 90% of the time - worst photos imaginable. In the meantime, please be entertained by this photo from Halloween. The one on the left, sad pig-nose face, was mine and the evil one on the right was Adam's. ]

- We made a post-thanksgiving road trip up north to visit some relatives who live about 10 miles from the closest store. It's a lovely place to be and we don't go there nearly enough. There are donkeys, cows, horses, crooked trees, trees, old sheds, tractors, rifles, and regular folks.

This morning, before we packed up, I picked a huge bag of pears from their pear tree!!!! I am amazed at fruit trees and I hope that one day I can have a fruit tree in my yard. I have more pears than I could ever afford from the store. Tomorrow, on cyber tuesday, I'll be hunting online for pear recipes -- perhaps a cobbler? a pie? a tart? pears of poachville?

Another culinary trip highlight were the rolls at Logan's Roadhouse. Please. I urge you to stop in a Logan's for the fluffliest rolls -- like a savory Krispy Kreme -- coated with melted butter and full of air. Super hot and amazing.
